CINEPHILE: We Hack Faye Dunaway’s Style in Bonnie & Clyde

Posted: Jul 01 2014

There are lots of great movies, but there are some that truly stand out in terms of styling. The classic “Bonnie & Clyde” is one such example. Starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, it’s truly an outlaw romance with the period clothes to match.

Though wardrobe dressed Dunaway in time-appropriate garb, her styling also has a classic, chic feel that works even today. Bonnie’s style in the movie still influences designers and scenesters even now and continues to. How to achieve the legendary Bonnie’s style and adapt it for a plus size figure? You’re in luck, because we’re about to break it down for you.

-Luckily, a lot of Bonnie’s look relied on jaunty accessories, which are easy to attain no matter your budget or dress size. The iconic look from the movie is, of course, her cream colored beret. We love the chapeaux worn with a pencil skirt and knit top with heels. It’s timeless and elegant. We also love pearl jewelry and retro brooches to get that vintage feel.

-Hair was key to Dunaway’s character. She had what would now be considered a “lob”, or a longer bob in a honey blonde. Aside from actually bobbing your hair, you can create a faux bob by pinning the underside of your hair and tucking it. There are many online tutorials on how to do so and it’s a fairly easy way to get that period style.

-Dunaway’s beauty look was similarly timeless and beautiful. Sunkissed skin, peachy blush and lips and an overall glowing look added to her gun moll allure. Go light on the makeup and concentrate on neutral shades and perfecting your skin to get the look. Nude lips and lined eyes add mystery as well.

-Finally, the clothes! 1930s looks were above all elegant and simple and Dunaway’s wardrobe in this movie displays that perfectly. Bias cut dresses, slinky pencil skirts and knit tops in solid, basic shades of cream, navy, gray and black were chic and echoed the trends of the time. Bonnie also wears a belted tweed jacket in the film that is beautiful and a wonderful, classic piece for any girl to have in her closet.

Our Mynt picks for Bonnie-approved style are the Damaris Sheath Dress, the Gigi skirt and the Beryl Blouse
